Mugabe And Wife Kick Start 2018 Voter Registration Exercise

President Robert Mugabe, his wife, Grace, and several top state officials on Thursday kick-started Zimbabwe’s voter registration exercise using newly acquired Biometric Voter Registration kits provided by a Chinese company.

Mr. Mugabe was the first one to be registered in the new voters roll, which will be used in the crucial 2018 general elections.

His identity documents were checked by Zimbabwe Electoral Commission chairperson, Rita Makarau, before his fingerprints were captured by the biometric voter registration machines in Harare.

President Mugabe made a proclamation that voter registration should start on Thursday and end in January next year.

Opposition parties claim that this is a fraudulent exercise as the country has only received 400 kits out of the 3,200 needed to conduct the voter registration scheme.

They claim that Zimbabwe has also not been able to secure severs to store the collected voters’ information, adding that this may be tempered with resulting in the conduction of fraudulent elections next year.

The opposition has noted that children turning 18 after January 15 next year won’t be able to vote in the next elections as the voters’ roll will be closed for the elections expected to be conducted in July 2017.
