The Zimbabwean government has reversed the appointment of Advocate Ray Hamilton Goba as the country’s prosecutor general, a few months after he replaced Johannes Tomana, who was removed from the post for alleged gross misconduct and incompetence.

Goba was appointed by President Robert Mugabe on September 14th.

The government announced in an Extraordinary Gazette, General Notice 642 of 2017, that “it is hereby notified that the captioned General Notice that was published in the Gazette Extraordinary on the 13th September, 2017, is repealed.”

It is not yet clear why President Mugabe’s government issued the statutory instrument as a supplement for the Gazette Extraordinary titled ‘Constitution of Zimbabwe: Repeal of General Notice 493 of 2017 Concerning the Appointment of Prosecutor General of Zimbabwe’.

Vice President Emmerson Mnangagwa held the justice ministry portfolio before the president removed him from that post.

Mnangagwa has been linked to a faction of the ruling Zanu PF party known as Team Lacoste backing him to succeed Mr. Mugabe. The other faction, Generation 40, said to be led by First Lady Grace Mugabe, allegedly wants her to succeed the 93 year old president when he leaves the post.
