President Emmerson Mnangagwa has been awarded an Honourary Doctor of Laws Degree by the Midlands State University (MSU), before capping 6,612 graduates at the university campus in Gweru today.
Speaking at the occasion, Cde Mnangagwa, who is now the MSU Chancellor, said Zimbabwe is in need of a graduate who is a goal getter, one who can unlock value in lots of resources for the betterment of all Zimbabweans.
He also said agriculture has always been a key driver of the Zimbabwean economy, hence the need to produce more and add value to the products.
Prior to the graduation ceremony, President Mnangagwa was installed as Chancellor of the institution by MSU Acting Vice Chancellor, Professor Victor Muzvidziwa.
In his acceptance speech, Cde Mnangagwa reiterated government’s commitment in addressing challenges facing the country’s institutions of higher learning and implored the private sector to partner with government in supporting tertiary education in areas of research, which he said were an integral component that can drive the country’s development trajectory.
He said education at whatever level is a fundamental human right that should be accessed by every Zimbabwean.
On those who would want to emulate him, President Mnangagwa said the road he has travelled was filled of thorns, gnashing of teeth and death.
The graduation ceremony was the 17th for the university and was held under the theme: ‘Transforming Dreams into Reality.
