Staff ReporterThe Parliament of Zimbabwe and the Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation have signed a memorandum of understanding to enhance the visibility of parliament business.
The MOU has been signed by the Speaker of the National Assembly Advocate Jacob Mudenda and ZBC board chair Father Gibson Munyoro.
Section 141 of the constitution of Zimbabwe provides that the public must have access and get involved in parliament business.
It is against this background that the parliament and the ZBC signed the MOU to ensure participatory democracy.
Advocate Mudenda challenged the national broadcaster to conduct its national obligation by broadcasting live all the important parliament proceedings. He also challenged ZBC to lead by example by reflecting different regions in the recruitment of top management.
Father Munyoro assured the nation that the national broadcaster will not cover up for parliamentarians who sleep on duty.
Senate president Cde Edna Madzongwe says live coverage of parliament business will enhance accountability to the electorate by legislators.
The MOU is the first of its kind to be signed between the two parties and is expected to improve participatory democracy from the electorate where the legislative authority is derived from.
