Joseph Guthrie delivers a scathing response to Theresa May’s open letter on the Brexit deal

Dear Theresa,

You’ve done it. You’ve completed the Trump University module How to ruin everyone’s lives and sell it back to them as a good thing and now you’re going to try to force feed this Brexit deal down every Britons’ throat, including the ones that didn’t get a say because they were barred from voting in the referendum by virtue of living in the EU; either at the time of the referendum or indefinitely.

Let’s just get one thing out of the way and you can consider this my only token of goodwill toward you: this is your predecessor’s (David Cameron) fault. His arrogance, his hubris, and his misguided belief that his fellow Tory cronies would play by the rules put countless millions of futures on the line unnecessarily and as of today, they look to be objectively lost. The culmination of over two years of Tory petulanceBrexiteer scandal, and anti-EU propaganda has taken the shape of a withdrawal agreement that you’d be hard pressed to find anyone on either side of the Leave/Remain binary even mildly satisfied with. Hell, even Facebook is involved in this mess. That said, you stepped into the fray.

“You yourself said “The aim is to create, here in a Britain, a really hostile environment for illegal immigrants.” You did that and more. No wonder things continued to get ugly!”

Of course, this was after Cameron produced one of the most cowardly moments I’ve ever seen from a politician and after so many people in the Conservative leadership race dropped out faster than touring cars crash during any given circuit; suffice to say, no one in your party actually voted for you… but you did it! You became Prime Minister of the U.K. and you wasted no time regurgitating every single lie and misleading claim you could muster up.

You and your government did nothing outside of a limp response when the bastions of the British conservative press referred to High Court judges as ‘enemies of the people.’ When every racistIslamophobic, and xenophobic dog whistle was blown in the name of Brexit, you and your government stoked the flames of resentment by once again doing nothing to curtail the increase in hate crime if you weren’t found blowing said dog whistles yourself. The world writ large might not be up to speed on your horrific legacy as Home Secretary but I am, homeless EU citizens are, as are quite a few of the elders that make up part of the Black British community. You know… Windrush?

“No matter how you or your press barons spin this, this is your legacy. This is what I will remember you for. This is what millions of Britons – in and outside of the UK – will remember you for”

You yourself said “The aim is to create, here in a Britain, a really hostile environment for illegal immigrants.” You did that and more. No wonder things continued to get ugly! When the same rhetoric and actions informed by said rhetoric get another nationalist remix – this time in aid of leaving the European Union – and are then foisted on people up and down the UK, what did you expect? You may have voted Remain and the more hardcore Brexit supporter may disingenuously use that against you for why they don’t like this terrible deal, but the truth is as clear as day: you helped set the framework for what the UK has become and will continue to mutate into post 29 March 2019.

No matter how you or your press barons spin this, this is your legacy. This is what I will remember you for. This is what millions of Britons – in and outside of the UK – will remember you for. Given that your predecessor in Cameron was the one who is responsible for initiating the chaos, you will have to live with being the one who did absolutely nothing to stop it. You are the one who spearheaded, supported, and enabled this movement of empirical romanticism and prejudiced, xenophobic bile.

So when you undertake another romp through some fields of wheat, just remember that it’s only a temporary escape from the reality you helped forge: a Britain full of “Byzantine” laws that punish anyone who exists outside of the nationalist margins of what it means to “be British; where British nationalists take their cues not from you but from the Tangerine Manbaby Fascist Nightmare who is a friend of Brexit’s most notorious backers.

Congratulations on exacting your venomous will to the letter. I can’t wait to hear you lecture us all about compromise.

Distastefully yours,

Joseph Guthrie
