On Saturday, crowds converged on the heart of Omar al-Bashir’s rule — Sudan’s presidential palace and the nation’s military headquarters — for a mass sit-in calling for the dictator to be deposed.

Five days later, the Sudanese strongman had been forced from office, his government dissolved and a military council put in place to oversee a transition of power over the next two years.
