Harare-MDC Alliance deputy national chairperson Tendai has been convicted of contravening sections of the Electoral Act after he prematurely announced the 2018 Presidential Election results.
.

Biti called a press conference on July 31 last year, a day after voting, and said that their tallying showed that MDC leader Nelson Chamisa had won the election.

Harare magistrate Gloria Takundwa this morning said Biti’s announcement fell foul of provisions of the Electoral Act.

Biti “presented his announcement as authentic and his actions had potential to undermine the official announcement by ZEC. The intention of the Act is to prevent such behaviour exhibited by the accused which undermines the authority of ZEC,” the magistrate said.

The court is now hearing mitigation before the magistrate hands down judgment.

Meanwhile, MDC leader Nelson Chamisa is in court in solidarity with Biti.

According to the official results, Mr Mnangagwa obtained 50.8% of the vote, compared with Mr Chamisa’s 44.3%. The remaining votes went to 21 other candidates.
