When England named their World Cup squad on 21st May, Alex Hales, David Willey and Joe Denly were all left out. Hales was dropped from the provisional squad after serving a suspension for reportedly failing a recreational drugs test. James Vince has been called up in his place.
Jofra Archer and Liam Dawson were called up to replace Willey and Denly, providing them with the perfect opportunity to prove themselves. According to betting on cricket World Cup, England are the favourites to win the tournament, and these replacements will play a vital role in any success achieved. The question is, can they make their mark?
Hampshire County Cricket Club captain James Vince is the perfect replacement for Alex Hales. His impressive score of 190 – Hampshire’s highest-ever List A score – against Gloucestershire helped secure him a place in the World Cup squad.
With the addition of Vince to the squad, England are not short of leaders, with limited over cricket captain Eoin Morgan and test cricket captain Joe Root also included in the squad. Morgan will be the World Cup captain, but Root and Vince will no doubt chip in to help keep morale high and motivation strong.
He has close to 1,500 runs across all cricket formats, from 309 matches. Vince will want to prove to coach Trevor Bayliss that he was wrong to leave him out of the initial squad, so expect some impressive displays for England.
Vince’s Hampshire teammate Liam Dawson has also been announced as a replacement for the England squad. The all-rounder has only played three One Day Internationals previously, so this might come as a shock to him.
The 29-year-old has a wealth of experience behind
The final replacement in the England team is Sussex bowling all-rounder Jofra Archer. Born in Barbados, Archer is the joint-youngest player in the team, along with Tom Curran, and has the joint lowest One Day International appearances with three, the same as Liam Dawson.
He has produced some impressive displays in the past, not least the test series against South Africa in July 2007, where he took four wickets and scored a pair of two-ball ducks. While Vince provides leadership and batting skills, and Dawson provides all-round talent, Archer provides good competition in the bowling department as well as a youthful spirit which could push England across the line to glory.
All three have the potential to impress at this year’s World Cup and Bayliss has selected well with his replacements. There’s not long to go until the tournament begins, but as the odds suggest, England are the team to beat.
